The Girl
Design Process
In my children's illustration class, we were assigned to recreate a scene from a children's illustration but only using the text and make our own interpretation of this scene.

I chose "The Boy" by Oliver Jeffers. We had the option to change the gender so I changed it to a girl instead. From there, I brainstormed the character design for the girl and her imaginary friend. Once I chose the imaginary friend design I liked the most, I started creating thumbnails for this scene as you can see above.

The scene that captured the text the best was a crowd of people and letting the crowd of people guy the viewer to the colourful main characters.

From here, the challenge was to create that hierarchy to the two main characters and having enough space for the text to breathe. I solved this challenge by doing the thumbnails before hand and finding a limited colour palette. That way, having a limited colour palette allows the focus to be easier for the audience and having thumbnails gives options to where the text can go before going rendering the thumbnail to finals.

All things considered, this piece is great with or without the text. The people help guide the audience to the main characters and it was a great project to do.
